Smart Meter Killing Shrub


Three shrubs have been growing against the brick wall of this home for several years. They had such healthy and thich growth that a robin built her nest above the old electrical meter that had been here for years. About three months ago, the old but perfectly servicable electric meter was removed and replaced with a ‘smart meter’ which sends information to the electrical utility company by microwave radiation signals. This meter sends signals almost continuously, as can be seen and heard by the radio frequency meter readings. The damage caused by the radiation can be seen very clearly in this video. The harm to the shrub is much worse close to the meter and the damage decreases with the distance. At about three metres away, the shrub is quite healthy with bright green leaves. The leaves closest to the meter appear to be dried and diseased.

According to Health Canada, microwave radiation at this level, which is below their safety standards, does not cause biological harm.
The resident of this home has suffered sleep problems since the meter was installed.

Smart Meter Program Signals Health Concerns to Consumers: Exposure to Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) 24/7 Throughout Our Homes

Smart Meters for gas and electric usage are being installed in all of our homes as part of the California Public Utilities Commission mandate to upgrade California’s energy infrastructure with automated digital technology. The Smart Meter provides two way digital communication transmitting between the meter on your home and the utility company by way of a radio frequency (RF) network. The Smart Meter has two wireless transmitters, one sent directly into your home and one sent to the neighborhood data collector. The principle behind the Smart Meter is that it will allow consumers to know how much they are paying for energy usage at any time.  “Time of use” pricing will give the consumer the option to shift their energy usage to a time when the demand for power is lower and therefore the price is less.

Sounds like a great idea!  Save money by knowing when the best time during the day it is to cook dinner or use your heat or air conditioning. The real concern should be not the money we save, but what this constant RF radiation is doing to our health.  The current standards for RF radiation set by the FCC are not safety standards, but rather regulatory standards.  They were not put in place by physicians or medical scientists who had carefully studies the effects of RF radiation of our bodies, but rather by engineers who were looking at the amount of radiation necessary to allow for successful transmission for technological applications such as cell phones – and now Smart Meters. These regulatory standards sound good, but are meaningless when one considers that RF radiation penetrates every living cell – plant, animal, and human.  The first organ RF radiation affects is the brain, and the brain is the center of our physical and emotional being. The present FCC standards are for short term, thermal based applications such as microwave ovens.  As such, they only protect us from being cooked, burned, or electrocuted!  It is not the thermal effect we are concerned about. It is the biological or “non-thermal” effect.

Smart Meters will be sending a strong signal into our homes at frequencies between the 902 and 928 megahertz bandwidth . These wireless signals penetrate walls and pervade our entire home environment, traveling along electrical wiring, metal plumbing, metal fencing, box springs, and so on.  Besides communicating with your appliances, they will be communicating with the outside network of meters and a cell site or wireless antenna in your neighborhood.

Chronic exposure to radiofrequency and microwave radiation is still considered a potential health risk. The Smart Meter RF/MW levels are much higher than those already reported to cause cell damage. Research has shown that exposure to this low ambient radiation can cause damage to DNA.  What we know about cancer is that DNA damage is always present.  Through the roll out of the Smart Grid program, we are being bombarded with EMR – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Insomnia, high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, chronic fatigue, confusion . . . Why do we feel so bad?  If we could see the EMF we wouldn’t tolerate it!  It is invisible. We are living in a wireless smog, which just got thicker with the EMF from the Smart Meter installations.

What happens physiologically when we are exposed to EMR from cell phones.

A raw microwave is invisible to biological tissue unless it is pushed by high power or carries information. With wireless communication information must be carried on the microwave and deciphered at the other end. The information has to be bundled in packets based on amplitude modulation. There are time and code breaks in the modulation to allow several to communicate at one time. Therefore to allow multiple access, these packets of data move and stop and move and stop. When that happens, it forms a secondary wave called an “information carrying radio wave” (ICRW). The body picks up this wave as it oscillates in the hertz range.

Here is what happens to our bodies when it is exposed to an ICRW. Our cell membrane has vibrational protein receptors that are able to pick up radio waves that oscillate in the hertz to kilohertz range. Since this ICRW is man made and not natural, it is interpreted by the vibrational receptors as an invader to our cells triggering a protective biochemical reaction.  When exposed to these ICRW  the active transport channels where the nutrients pass into the cells and the waste products pass out, close down. When the nutrients cannot get into the cell, the cell becomes energy deficient and cannot communicate with the surrounding cells. There is a disruption in intercellular communication, a fundamental physiological process. Since the cell is closed down and the waste products cannot get out of the cells, a high concentration of reactive molecules built up called “free radicals”. These free radicals go to the mitochondria, where all the respiratory functioning in the cell takes place, and disrupts its cellular function. When the cell is disrupted at the mitochondria level, it goes through apoptosis, which is programmed cell death. When apoptosis is triggered the cell membrane disintegrates and what ever is in the cell goes into the space between the cells.

Free radicals also interfere with DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) repair inside the cell. A micronucleus is a piece of DNA. As long as it stays inside the cell it is okay. But when the cell membrane disintegrates the micronucleus is released in the intercellular fluid, a nutrient rich environment that once surrounded the cell. Normally our immune system would be sending a message that the micronucleus is in this environment. But the intercellular communication has been disrupted and the message from the immune system does not get there. So now you have a micronucleus that is a piece of  DNA in a nutrient-rich environment where it is free to clone and proliferate. That is the mechanism for the development of a tumor.

How different frequencies of electro magnetic radiation (EMR) effect our health.

Electro magnetic radiation (EMR) is found everywhere in the environment. Electro magnetic fields (EMF) can be high or low strength, natural or man made, and continuous or short-term. In an electro magnetic field the magnetic field and electric field travel perpendicularly self propagating… the magnetic field produces an electric field and the electric field produces a magnetic field.

All electromagnetic radiation in the electro magnetic spectrum is not created equal, and has different health effects on our bodies. There are four pathological effect windows in the electro magnetic spectrum.

  1. Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) fields are those such as power lines, plug in devices, household appliances, etc. In this effect window of low frequency, the magnetic field is dominant. Magnetic fields have been around since the beginning of time. Our bodies have developed a threshold for this radiation as long as there is not a excessively high amount of power that is pushing the magnetic field, like directly below power lines. ELF deals in the HZ to KHZ range. (60-1000 HZ)
  2. Higher frequencies (HF) are the microwave effect window.  A raw microwave signal oscillating at 1900 million cycles per second, is too fast for the body to pick up. Our bodies only recognize a microwave when high power is put behind the signal causing a heating of tissue…like heating meat in a microwave oven.
  3. The Information Carrying Radio Wave (ICRW) effect window includes all wireless transmission… cell phones, cell towers, Wi-Fi. The mechanism of harm involves biological responses triggered at the cell membrane. We have no threshold to the exposure of ICRW.
  4. The highest end of the spectrum is the ionising radiation effect window. This is a powerful source causing extremely high energy breaking chemical bonds. These electro magnetic waves are from sunlight, lightening, Ultra violet, X-rays… Our bodies have a limited threshold for this radiation depending on intensity of the power, proximity to the source, duration & frequency, and vulnerability of the person.

The Science of The Smart Meter.

In order to fully grasp the “science” of the Smart Meter one must first understand the basics. The OpenWay Smart Meter is the meter that is being supplied by SDGE. It will use several systems with different capabilities and capacities. OpenWay is able to use multiple transport technologies (RF, BPL, PLC, IP) so almost any network can be “seamlessly integrated”. This will allow these meters to “talk” to each other. Currently  the OpenWay meter uses a one-way RF signal that operates in the 902-928 Mhz range. In order to provide a secure network they use what is called “spread spectrum” technology. This spread spectrum technology creates noise like waves which make it difficult to detect. Most spread spectrum systems transmit an RF signal bandwidth as wide as 20 to 254 times the bandwidth of the information being sent. Some spread spectrum systems have sent out RF bandwidths 1000 times their information bandwidth. The reason being is that in order to transmit information to distant meters (i.e. rural areas) it has to produce a larger wave. With this information, YOUR information, utility companies will be able to gather your patterns of use, consumer preferences, and much more. This wireless in-home networking is able to connect with smart appliances, smart thermostats and other meters. These Meters also feature an advanced service switch which will allow the utility company to remotely connect, disconnect, or LIMIT service. Soon, these smart meters will start using a wireless technology called Zigbee which is similar to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The safety guidelines set by the FCC regarding EMR and cell sites are faulty!

What is wrong with the safety guidelines set by the FCC regarding cell sites?

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is not a health and safety agency. The FCC is a licensing and engineering agency that relies on other agencies to recommend and set safety standards for communication technology. The standards set by the FCC are based on heating of tissue only, and therefore assures us that we will not be “cooked” as a chicken in a microwave from the radio waves emitted from cell towers. The FCC standards do not take into account numerous research reports finding biological effects from non-thermal Information Carrying Radio Waves (ICRW). The FCC standards do not take into account long term, low level, and continuous exposure of humans who live near RF emitting telecommunication sites. Their standards are based on 1996 information (much of which came from short term studies in the 1980’s) and now, more than decade later, are outdated. The FCC (22) guidelines are based on short term thermal effects. The guidelines are based on the assumption that if microwave energy does not heat tissue it is not harmful.

This assumption is incorrect! Adverse biological effects have been documented at levels below federal guidelines.  There are no federal guidelines for non-thermal effects or long term exposure to the low ambient radiation from the ICRW.

The different measuring devices used to measure electromagnetic radiation.

There are different measuring devices used for different fields of radiation. Be mindful that you are using the right one!

Lower Frequencies:

~electric field meter: electrical appliances, electric blanket, TV, power cords, and other electronic devices

~magnetic field meter or Gauss meter: fuse box, high voltage power lines, halogen lights, dimmer switches, all appliances like refrigerator, hair dryer, stoves, alarm clocks

Higher Frequencies:

~RF Meter: baby monitor, microwave ovens, cellular phones, hand-held PDA’s, all wireless devices,  fluorescent lights

Highest Frequencies

~Geiger counter or scintillation counter:  X rays and gamma rays

What you need to know about cell phones and your health.

CELL PHONES: We ask ourselves, “What would we do without them?” What we don’t know is that we are receiving more than just phone calls and text messages. Cell phones emit a laser-like beam from both its internal and external antennas. These beams of radiation are classified in two ways, near field and far field. Near field radiation goes into your ear canal and directly to your brain. The far field radiation goes through anything in its path. So wherever your phone is when it is not being used… pockets, purses, clips, etc., it is radiating sensitive body parts. Radiation affects all organs of the body including the liver, kidneys, ovaries, breasts, testicles and eyes. Radiation does lessen with distance, but even the far field is hazardous as the radio waves carrying information are still pulsing throughout your body.

You are still receiving radio waves even when your phone is on standby since it communicates continuously on full power to the nearest base station to ensure you have the best signal. It is the worse when your phone reads “low signal bars” since it transmits every 30 seconds to try to get a better signal. The only time cell phones are not emitting radiation is when the battery is out.

There are precautions you can take to ensure you are as safe as possible. Use your cell phone as little as possible. Your phone uses full power when connecting to a number so hold it as far from your head as possible until it has finished dialing.  Never use a cell phone within six inches of your body. It is best to use the speakerphone as much as possible.  Refrain from using your cell phone in an elevator, car, train, or airplane.  Any enclosure surrounded by metal increases your exposure to the radiation since the radiation bounces off the metal as your phone continually searches for a signal. It is also recommended not to use your phone at high speeds because this automatically increases its power to maximum as it tries to connect to new antennas.

Obviously the safest solution is to not use cell phones at all. Keep in the mind that the “fancier” the phone with all the special features, the more power it takes, thus the potential for more harm.

How to reduce personal radiation exposure from “Wi-Fi” or wireless networks.

Wireless Internet, otherwise known as Wi-Fi, is the most common way of connecting people to the Internet. These wireless “hot spots” lurk everywhere; coffee shops, schools, hotels, and now even throughout an entire city… Austin, Texas! With this connection comes a continuous pulsating microwave radiating, even when computers are not being used. How do you avoid this radiation? You can switch to network cables and run the cables to the rooms requiring Internet access. The same applies when using a laptop or notebook/netbook. You should disable the wireless connections, as the default setting ensures that wireless is on as soon as you start your computer. If you are not able to hardwire your house you may use power-line networking. It is not the safest way but still beats Wi-Fi since the signal is not going through the air but through the power-lines.

What if someone doesn’t want to give up their wireless connection? If you have someone that insists on using their wireless Internet, you may turn on the router for the period of time it is being used then immediately shut it off. It is important the wireless router is turned off at night.
